Care and Maintenance
Basic Cleaning Steps:
- If the countertop contains wood edges or caps, be sure to
finish them to prevent water damage.
- Wash the surface with mild dish washing liquid or powdered
detergent and warm water. Use a soft dish cloth. Rinse with warm water
and dry with a soft cloth. Water is generally all that is needed. A
quick wipe will clean most stains.
- For harder to remove spots, use an all-purpose cleaner or
bathroom cleanser. Follow the manufacturers instructions. Rinse with
warm water and dry with a soft cloth.
Note - Do not use cleaners that contain harsh acids or abrasives.
- For very stubborn spots, make a paste with baking soda and
water. The paste will be slightly abrasive so work carefully to keep
from damaging the surface you're cleaning. Dip a soft bristle brush
into the paste to cover the bristles. Then, gently rub the spot with
the brush, moving in a circular motion and pressing very lightly. Rinse
the surface with warm water and dry with a soft cloth. Repeat steps
above as necessary, if the spot seems to be lifting.
- If the spot still remains, use undiluted household bleach. Be
very careful to protect your skin. It's a good idea to wear rubber
gloves when working with full strength bleach. Apply the bleach to the
spot and let it stand NO MORE THAN 90 SECONDS. Rinse several times with
plenty of warm water and dry with a soft cloth. If the spots seems to
be going away, repeat above steps.
Common Stains:
- Ketchup - Wipe up with a damp cloth. If the ketchup has dried,
wash it off with mild detergent and warm water.
- Cigarrette Burn - A lighted cigarette allowed to remain on a
decorative laminate surface; it could blister the surface or cause a
permanent stain.
- Coffee - Washes off with a mild detergent. For dried coffee
stains, if necessary, treat with bleach.
- Heat -Laminate surfaces are resistant to heat damage. However,
prolonged exposure to high heat can cause blistering, staining, or
delamination.
- Juices - If not removed immediately, these must be washed with
bleach as stated above.
FormFill Repairer and Seam Filler - Instructions
Many times customers object to the seam caused by a mitered joint. Production
post forming methods makes it impossible to create seamless turns and corners.
In addition, all laminate manufacturers limit their largest sheet to 60 X 144
inches so any top longer than 12 feet will have a seam. We stock laminate
repair in all laminate colors in a premixed tube which can be used to hide or
in some cases, repair, seams and nicks in the countertop surface.
By the way: This product will do a good job of hiding or repairing small
chips, cracks and seams in the customers countertop as long as the product can
adhere to the substrate material. It will not adhere to the colored portion
of the top or to substrate that is dirty or greasy. You may use lacquer
thinner or acetone to clean the surface prior to application.
When you order seam filler, use the laminate color number and name. We will
ship a one-ounce tube of premixed seam filler to your guest via Fed Ex.
Application instructions will be included with your order. You may order seam
filler in any of our over 200 colors pre-mixed.
- FormFill Laminate Repairer and Seam Filler have been designed
to bond (Adhere) to the phenolic backer of HPL (High Pressure
Laminate). The backer is either brown or black in color. It will also
adhere to particle board, medium density fiber board, and plywood.
FormFill Laminate Repairer is not designed to adhere to the surface to
HPL.
- Prepare the surface of the area exposed to the phenolic backer
or substrate. Thoroughly clean the area with FormFill solvent
(Acetone). It is important to use 100% Acetone when working with the
product.
- Squeeze the Repairer onto the leading edge of a stainless
steel flexible putty knife. Draw the repairer across the area to be
repaired by flexing the putty knife. This action will force the
Repairer down into the area to be repaired. Repeat this action several
times until the repairer starts to harden.
- Remove any excess Repairer from around the area being repaired
with the leading edge of the putty knife. When removing excess repairer
from a seam or miter joint, be sure to remove the excess off perpendicularly
to the seam. Wait approximately 15 minutes to allow the product to completely
dry.
- FormFill Laminate Repairer is a solvent based product and some
shrinkage will occur. If the repairer has shrunk below the surface
being repaired, simply repeat steps 2 & 3 until the repair is
satisfactory.
- Use a tissue or cloth with FormFill Solvent and with light
pressure, blend the repairer level with the surface.
DO:
- DO use a polished putty knife to spread and work FormFill. By
mixing the FormFill, the evaporation of solvents will thicken it,
improve the application, and reduce shrinkage.
- DO make certain you close the tube so that it isn't hard the
next time you reach for it.
DON'T:
- DON'T apply FormFill directly from the tube (if you do, excess
shrinkage may occur).
- DON'T expect to be able to fill a large void in one
application. If the area to be repaired exceeds 1/16", it is
considered a large void.
- DON'T use FormFill on vertical surfaces if there is any
possibility of movement. Remember, Standard FormFill is rigid and will
not flex as movement occurs.
- DON'T expect FormFill to repair major defects.
To validate the warranty on any wood edge countertop, be sure to finish
any and all exposed wood edges.
